The presidential suite was a honeymooner’s paradise complete with chocolate-covered strawberries, a bucket of champagne chilling in the living room and a trail of red rose petals leading to the master bedroom. Dozens of candles gave the room a romantic glow. Fallon stared at the enormous bed, picked up her train and came back into the living room. She wasn’t ready to face the night ahead.
Once Fallon entered the room, Gage held up the bottle. “Care for champagne?”
“I’d love some.” Fallon needed liquid courage for what was ahead. She didn’t know how not to show her true feelings because her heart was involved now. Her whole heart. Somehow she’d tripped into a state of love without knowing it and she knew with certainty Gage could break her heart. Because for Gage tonight was all about desire. Sexual desire. And she felt it, too. This raw, carnal, all-consuming lust. It was why she was so out of control whenever they were together. Even now her stomach was pulled tight in knots wondering what it would be like to be with him.
Gage made Fallon aware of her own body and she knew before the night was over he would become familiar with every inch of it. Of that she was sure. It was in the flare of his eyes as they drifted over her. He handed her a flute of champagne. She accepted and downed the entire glass in one gulp.
“There’s no need to be nervous, Fallon,” Gage assured her as he sat on the couch. “We have all night. There’s no rush. Come here.” He patted the seat next to him.
At first Fallon didn’t move a muscle but when he gave her an imploring look, she relented and sat. “This feels a little surreal.”
Gage reached for her hand and turned it over. When he did, the impressive six-carat diamond ring he’d purchased caught the light. He fingered it with his thumb. “I would disagree. It feels very real.”
He cupped her face in one hand. “Is it really so scary to be married to me, Fallon?” His thumb swept across her lips, making her flesh tingle.
“I’m not scared,” Fallon responded. “I made a choice and I stand behind it.”
Gage straightened. “I’m glad. I would hate for you to regret the time we spend together.”
Fallon had her doubts about the marriage but not about the pleasure she would find in Gage’s arms. Leaning forward, his lips found hers. It wasn’t a tentative kiss, nor was it a kiss meant to entice. The touch of his mouth was soft, yet it shot volts of electricity right through Fallon and she wanted more. When he lowered his head again it wasn’t to her closed mouth—she’d already parted her lips. She gave in to his hungry mouth. Her hands moved to his chest and upward to link her arms around his neck to bring him closer, but Gage pulled away.
She didn’t understand. “What’s wrong?”
“I promised you we’d take this slow...”
Fallon rose and held out her hand.
